U.S.  CIVIL WAR PENNY TOKENS:  During the U.S. Civil War, there was a shortage of change for use by Business men, because of travel problems caused by the War. So Business men had Penny tokens made by private companys in their area, these local business men would give these penny tokens out as change and would except then back as payment for goods. These Tokens were made in many styles most with Patriotic themes, such as  "Army & Navy" or  "Union forever" and some businessmen put their names on them.
